After leaving the crew at Casper's fire house 1, Dave and I hammered out 50 miles in about 3 hours and stopped in Douglas, WY for a little lunch. If you ever find yourself there, stop in at the Plains Trading Post for a bite to eat. Great place for food and the building was built from several previous buildings in the area like an old school and hospital. Over 2000 doors were used to construct the ceiling and partitions inside and took 6 years to complete. It opened in 1979 and it has carried on a successful business because of the food and the ice cream parlor attached to it.
We left the Plains Trading post and headed over to the Douglas VFD and were given a tour of their fire station. The truck seen here is a 114' combination articulating platform and an aerial ladder attached also. Seems they prefer E-One fire equipment as most of the apparatus was built by them.
Thank you Lucas for meeting us at the station and giving us a tour
We all know traveling America's roads is not without detours and this trip is no different. An
overpass at Orin and I-25 was being rebuilt which caused Fred to have to go a little out of his way to get back on our route. Dave and I were allowed to cross over that bridge with permission from the construction crew. However, they shared a story with us that last weekend there was a charity bike ride where two bicyclist went through the barricades after they had just poured concrete and left several deep tire tracks in the road surface. Not only that but they had to crawl under a three foot space created by a piece of equipment that laid the road surface. Little did they know that after a visit from the popo (Wyoming State Police) they would be responsible for the damages and that was $20,000. Ouch!
Ater 110 miles of riding we arrived at Lusk VFD where we met Chief John Eddy who was busy cooking dinner for us and his firefighters. Some who were there and for four others who would be coming back soon from a grass fire about 57 miles away. A big thank you Tom and Chris for making us feel very welcome along with Chris's family. To all the other firefighters we met, thank you. Thank you Chris for putting up the Luck VFD patch to go along with all the others.
The Lusk, WY leg of this trip is being dedicated to in memory of Trampus Haskvitz, 23, who died just last week while fighting the Coal Canyon fire in South Dakota. Our prayers are with the family and his crew.
