Day 14 August 15, 2011

We left Moran Junction, Station 4 at around 8:00 am headed for Riverton, WY. This would be our longest ride for the trip, 133 miles. Thinking we would get in around 9:00 PM because of the distance and one more summit to tackle, we were way wrong! Due to road construction, we had to load up the bikes twice which took a few miles off and a day long tail wind to increase our average speed. To give you an idea of how fast this day was, we hit a new top speed of 49.8 and for the last ten miles of the trip, we would ride on the edge of a thunderstorm which would push us forward. There was one point where Dave and I were pedaling up hill and a gust of wind pushed us to the top and over at 20 MPH, without our efforts. We added a little pedal power and were easily doing 30 MPH for most of the remaining ride. Driver Fred stayed with us to the rear while recording the storm Dave and I were riding.

To make a long story short, we arrived in Riverton around 4:30 PM after cover a total of 126 miles in that time. When we arrived in town and received a warm welcome from the community which included close friends from Santa Clara. We were greeted and hugged by many and then watched as two fire trucks from Riverton Volunteer FD pulled up to lead us into town. It was a parade of bicycles and fire trucks going through town while onlookers waved and took pictures. Here Chief Lee places their FD patch for FDNY

I had told Dave earlier in the day to expect something special today, little did I know that it would include us being storm riders and a reception that was overwhelming. At the Riverton's old fire station 1 Chief Matt Lee and his men, set us up with dinner and a tour of their new fire station. A 2.5 million dollar building which houses 12 pieces of apparatus.

  1. Just when you think it can't be done, God shows it can. I believe he knew you might've needed a little extra push this day! You guys are over a third of the way there! You're BEASTS!
